The South-East Tour

On our south/east tour, we pass through the village of Rabil, where artisans demonstrate the art of clay working and the baking, painting and decorating of their beautiful creations.

We drive along the coast via the beaches of Ervatao, the 12-kilometre-long beach where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the warm, moist sand.

Then we head further inland where we can see the famous baobab trees and almond trees with their fruits (in season).

The south-eastern interior takes us through four completely different natural landscapes, from red sand plains to white/ yellow sand dunes, through a few palm oases and black lava fields. There we spot the fields where the local population farms and where, despite the drought, the fertile soil produces a variety of fruit and vegetables.

The south-east has a few old abandoned villages where salt extraction used to be the source of income.

The renovated Morro Negro lighthouse, located at the easternmost point of Boa Vista, is a beautiful example of the renovation and modernisation of existing old architecture.

We leave the rugged nature behind us to discover the village of Fundo las Figueiras, the local school, the neat coloured houses and the local restaurant where we stop for something to eat and drink.

After lunch, we return to our starting point via Boa Vista’s famous local ROUTE 66! Route 66 starts south of Rabil and ends in Fundo de Figueiras.

This Route 66 on Boa Vista is not very long (18 km) but just as amazing! As far as you can see, this road, made entirely of cobblestones, winds its way between sand dunes and mountains! Chances are you won’t encounter a single car on this long road, and every now and then you’ll see a lone palm tree standing in the landscape! This, of course, gives you the authentic feeling of this ‘little’ Route 66!

Watch out for the donkeys; they sometimes want to cross the road just in front of the one car that passes by each day!
